The Magic of Muscle
The Magic of Muscle
Last edition, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discussed the magic of skeletal muscle and muscle synthesis, an endocrine system driven by the muscle that helps regulate hormones and glucose regulation, among many other things. Her approach to healthy living through muscle strength and movement cannot be overstated. Sarcopenia, or the degeneration of muscle, can begin early in life. Movement is essential for longevity and life expectancy, which our sedentary world works against. The beauty is that we can start today from where we are!
Here are a few key components of this podcast:
Muscle is medicine. Movement is medicine. You can dance! Just move.
Children and young adults can improve their muscle mass by increasing their intake of quality protein by as little as 10 grams/day.
Older adults, especially seniors, require 1g of quality protein per lb of desired weight to maintain muscle mass and achieve muscle synthesis.
Increased protein promotes satiety and helps blunt glucose spikes.
A 12-week study showed measurable results from walking or dancing 30 minutes/day plus resistance exercise twice a week.
By highlighting muscle as your target for better health, you can create positive momentum focused on what you have to gain instead of what you need to lose.
Leucine
In her podcast, Dr. Lyon outlines the importance of Leucine, an essential amino acid the body does not produce. Leucine has the unique ability to repair and build muscle. Shaklee’s quality protein Life Shakes contain leucine and are packed with 20 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and 24 essential vitamins and minerals for a complete meal in a convenient shake. You can choose between plant or soy-based. Our sports nutrition also includes Leucine in a delicious, light whey protein formula. Excellent for a post-workout drink! Learn more about our shakes from Dr. Jaime McManus, Shaklee’s Director of Medical Affairs.
So many exciting things are happening today in health and wellness, and Shaklee remains at the forefront of science. I look forward to covering more in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, take good care of yourself, turn on your favorite music, and move!
Keep it healthy,
Karen
